Michael Burges

German

Michael Burges was born in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1954. In 1981, Burges studied under the painter, Douglas Swan and by 1983 began his own exploration in abstract painting. Exhibiting his work from Hong Kong to Miami, Burges has also participated in group and solo exhibitions in Asia, Europe, the United Sates and Canada. He has been commissioned for several public installation projects in Germany and his work is collected by many public and private collections across the world. Michael Burges continues to create his magnificent paintings in his studio in Dusseldorf, Germany where he lives and works.

“These reverse paintings on glass extend a long and deep tradition of placing the image on the other side of a transparent transmission surface, in this case acrylic glass which unlike traditional vitreous and fragile glass, is shatterproof and scratch resistant. In other words, it assumes an ideally modernist stance and updates a material which was first explored by the classical Romans in the second century of our common era.” – Donald Brackett
