Gabi Trinkaus

Austrian

Gabi Trinkaus was born in 1966 in Graz, Austria. She currently lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Trinkaus graduated in 1997 from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Since then, she has exhibited internationally at Art Basel, Frieze, the Armory Show in New York, the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Viennafair and is a prolific part of many museum and private collections.  She has also been commissioned to create an official portrait for the president of Austria.

Trinkaus’ work revolves around the idealized notions of beauty and identity in contemporary society. Her artwork is constructed of images taken from magazines and transferred onto small paper pieces that are laid out to form landscapes and portraits.  The title of each work can always be found somewhere on one of the scraps of paper composing the image.

“Trinkaus’ work is also in conversation with the logic of fragmentation and dispersion inherent to new media culture.  Her use of it is of a “remediated” nature; she talks about media culture and its creation of beauty but rather than using a meta-language to talk about it, she uses its very materiality.  Embodiment is made of real life and so is language.”
